Friday, May 16, 2008. Cloudy. The surroundings here are extraordinary! The whole street is filled with a turbulent atmosphere, rousing, perplexing, alarming, and surreal. Jutta and I attended a fundraiser for victims of the Sichuan earthquake, organized by a fellow artist. After the meal, everybody quietly put money in a glass bowl, placed in front of a Buddhist altar. However much the donation came to, it is our compassion and sympathy that matters. | ![]() |

Sunday, May, 18, 2008. Sunny and windy.
Last week I was busy with several things all at once, different things happening around me. Accepting change and coming up with new solutions and strategies is the only way to survive here. This is what we call “Relations.” Next week I will prepare for the installation of 0. I will make a prototype of the work, as an experiment on various possibilities.
Tuesday, May, 27, 2008. Sunny.
The small pieces of the experiment are now finished. I am inspired by its great potential for the next step in 0. This experiment shows fascinating results beyond my expectation. I say “fascinating” because this kind of richness, sensuality, and variability in linguistic terms are difficult to approach and convert into reality. This experiment allows me to be prepared both physically and mentally for the installation of 0, which I hope will be a greater game, and bring me more fun.
Friday, May 30, 2008. Sunny.
The crazier, the messier 0’s interior is, the better! For example, bringing in slithering machinery snakes that jump and expand with full-on energy and power, like mollusk cells after catalytic metamorphosis. Feng Bo-Yi described it as “beautiful chaos!” I said it’s “the elegance of ferociousness!”
Wednesday, June 11, 2008. Sunny.
Obviously I will put information about the Wenchuan earthquake in 0. This will become a mix of classical and modern architecture, a piece where the main body of the work will flow, with the other parts attached and connected seamlessly. It ensures the visual integrative element of the work.
Wednesday, July 9, 2008. Cloudy.
Regarding the obtrusive and protuberant part of the installation 0, the original explanation was that it was the context that inspired the change. It was reported that about five to six countries arranged for their Olympic athletes to train in Japan and other places, due to air pollution in Beijing. There are lots of Olympic-related political events taking place. These circumstances make this sports event an intensive one.
Saturday, July 12, 2008. Sunny.
The main reason for choosing a sports ground for the exterior of the installation 0 is that it serves as a fixed focus. The demarcation of power is defined and confirmed here. The initiation or willingness to build a wall is not only in response to the need, but is also a preliminary preparation for external expansion.
At point zero, or starting point if you will, all fits into place—the past, present, and future, and is then controlled by human desire, which brings forth another form of passion. From the internal to the external, top to bottom, nothing is impossible!
Saturday, July 19, 2008. Sunny.
After adding the runway loop, the overall atmosphere of the installation 0 is much more strengthened. A stronger sense of flow and a stronger sense of the times. 0 totally breaks off from localism with its visual expressions, yet it incorporates the local element nicely without creating conflicts. This work will be seen by the whole world.
